The Government of Pakistan has formally requested the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) to approve a reduction of Rs1.71 per unit in electricity tariffs nationwide, including Karachi. This proposed decrease is intended to be effective from April to June 2025, aiming to provide financial relief to consumers.

Earlier media reports had suggested that the Prime Minister would announce a reduction of up to Rs8 per unit in electricity rates during his address to the nation on March 23. However, no such announcement was made in that speech. Sources indicate that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) permitted only a Rs1 per unit reduction, achievable through revenue generated from a grid levy imposed on industrial captive power plants.
NEPRA
In its submission to NEPRA, the government proposed increasing tariff subsidies to facilitate the reduction in electricity prices. NEPRA is scheduled to hear this petition on April 4, and the request encompasses all distribution companies, including K-Electric.
